Woods writes of the work in his introductory essay:
"The projects in this volume propose a new earth, a terra nova. It is an earth reconstituted and re-formed by human thought and feeling, by the human necessity to invent nature, and thereby turn the world-by action- into knowledge.

The Terra Nova projects- Underground Berlin, Aerial Paris, DMZ, Solohouse, Berlin-Free-Zone and the Stations- propose a world of architecture self-consciously attuned to the existential moment, the precise Now of physical conditions in the world of personal experience, the Now of powerful but fleeting sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings and actions. Being self-conscious- therefore self-referential-this architecture invents the world and all its nature as a necessary condition for personal existence and a comprehensive form of knowledge. It posits a kinematic utopia of uncertainty, a restlessly forming and re-forming terra nova."
