The New Industrial Parks near Irvine, California, was first published in 1974 and became key to the foundation of the New Topographics movement. Photographs were included int the 1975 landmark exhibition at the International Museum of Photography called “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape”.
Cited by Andrew Roth as one of the 101 seminal photographic works of the twentieth century.
(Book of 101 Books p.228-229).
Andrew Roth notes :
“The Irvine series, though (presumably) despairing of the industrial parks' cold emptiness, can't help but establish its link to minimalist painting and sculpture, particularly Donald Judd's boxes and Carl Andre's concrete blocks.“
“Whether conceived as a publication, an exhibition, or (frequently) both, each series is displayed as a whole, and individual photos are labeled "elements" of the larger piece. This approach, while arresting in museum installations, is even more ideally suited to book projects, and since The New Industrial Parks, Baltz has produced a number of similarly succinct and deftly designed publications that track his work away from the New Topographics but deeper into the international dead zone.”
